Actors and the value of a watch

Can actors affect how we perceive the value of a watch that they wear in a movie?

When we are watching a movie we are in a different time, we are in a different place, and the situation is different as well. These are most likely situations that we will never be able to experience.

A great example would be John Wick with a $7,000,000 bounty on his head trying to survive in New York on his own while several hitmen try killing him.

But why exactly would a watch brand like to add his name to a character that commits crimes?

People wear watches because it says something about them. Especially for men, it's an expression of how they would like to be perceived.

So if an actor is wearing a watch in the movie they can connect the watch to the character. (I’m not saying that if you wear the same watch as John Wick you are a murderer).

Men are used to wearing watches for their looks. For example, a lot of men like diving watches, but they never really go diving, it just looks cool so it makes them feel happy.

We can see product placement in movies and celebrities partnering with these brands. It’s worth it for the brand obviously and it’s worth it for the studio that is producing the movie. But why exactly?

It increases the demand for the watch, so it increases the brand's value as well. These brands pay tons of money so they can advertise their watch in the movie, so financially it’s easier for the Studio to produce the movie.

For these watch brands, this is a great advertising opportunity, so why wouldn’t they want to place their product in one of the most successful movies?

Watches can reinforce a character in the movie. In John's case, It’s how he keeps his expertly timed killing spree on schedule. It adds value to his character.

The watch he is wearing is a Carl F Bucherer Manero Autodate. This watch cost 2600 euros. It has a 1960s design 38 mm white and silver dial with an alligator black leather band (ref. 00.10908.08.13.01). It’s also available in dark blue (ref. 00.10908.08.33.01).

This watch is mostly known because of the movie, and its success. John Wick became an iconic character, and so has the watch.

There are a lot of brands that are known worldwide and advertise their watches through movies. For another example:

OMEGA built a whole collection around James Bond since 2006 still up to this day.

As I said It started with a James Bond movie called “Casino Royale”. Daniel Craig (the actor who plays James Bond) is wearing a Seamaster Diver 300M Co-Axial and a Planet Ocean 600M Co-Axial.

Both of these watches are limited edition. It comes in a 007 edition which is limited to a set number.  It is an absolute classic that will always be in high demand, making it an ideal investment opportunity. So it’s hard to get your hands on one of those.

The Seamaster Diver 300M Co-Axial is OMEGA’s sporty collection.

This model features a blue dial decorated with a wave pattern and a date window at the 3 o’clock position.

The distinctive dial is visible through a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

The blue unidirectional rotating bezel is mounted on a 41 mm stainless steel case with a helium-escape valve at 10 o'clock.

It features

Chronometer: It is a superior timekeeper and is very accurate.

Helium escape valve: It keeps diving watches from getting damaged during saturation diving. This safety valve allows any helium molecules that may have entered a watch to escape.

Unidirectional rotating bezel: It can warn divers when their oxygen is running low. As most scuba tanks run out of oxygen in around 60 minutes, rotating bezels are split into 60 sections with each section representing one minute.

Date: displays the day of the week, the date, the month of the year, and, of course, the time.

Screw-in crown: screws tightly into the case and protects the case from any form of dust and water

It’s water resistant (If that was not obvious from the last few lines and the name) to 30bar which is 300 meters or 1000 feet.

Planet Ocean 600M OMEGA Co-Axial is a Seamaster as well.

Planet Ocean is launched in 2005. It’s one of the classics of OMEGA’s dive watches.

features a matt structured black dial with a date window at the 3 o’clock position and the 007 logo at the 7 o'clock position.

The unique dial is visible through a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.

The black ceramic unidirectional rotating divers’ bezel is mounted on a 42 mm stainless steel case on a stainless steel bracelet.

Again it’s water resistant to 60 bars which is 600 meters and 2000 feet and has a helium-escape valve just like the Seamaster Diver.

The OMEGA Co-Axial calibre 8507 is visible through the sapphire crystal case back. "SKYFALL 007" is engraved on the rotor in black varnish.

This watch, just like the last two are made with extremely high-quality materials.

The Sapphire crystal is highly scratch-resistant and anti-reflective. The stainless steel is certainly the most conventional of watchmaking materials for outer craftsmanship and offers beauty, strength, and affordability.

Conclusion

“Can actors affect how we perceive the value of a watch that they wear in a movie?”

Yes, they can. People attach these watches to their faces, which is in this case the movie character. The movie will influence the watch price. The price is going to demand on how successful the movie is and on the actor playing the role. The more popular the actor is the more the watch will most likely cost.
